THE IGBO TRADITIONAL WEDDING CEREMONY

The Igbo traditional wedding ceremony is quite a colorful one with many segments.
The most important being the Igba Nkwu. Igba Nkwu ceremony starts with the arrival of the groom’s party with their drinks and other gifts. Next the bride’s family comes out to greet their in-laws.  Once most of the guests are settled in their respective places, the bride and her maids make the first appearance. This is primarily to greet the in-laws. Before the drinks are shared, the bride and her party make another appearance. This time, the bride kneels before her father to receive his blessing. After the blessing, the father pours palm wine into a cup and hands the cup over to his daughter to give to the groom. The groom is usually well hidden among the crowd to make it difficult for the bride to find him. The bride and her party will keep searching everywhere until they find him. Once she does that, she will offer him the cup of wine, which he sips and hands back to the bride for her to sip as well all to the applause of the audience.

Both the groom and the bride now go before each of their parents to get their prayers and blessing. Once the blessings are given, the newly married couple will dance together to entertain their guests. While the dance is going on, money is sprayed on them as well as on their parents and other relatives. Meantime, the bride’s family serves assorted food items that have been meticulously prepared to all the guests wherever they may be seated.

These days, Igba Nkwu also features the cutting of a cake by the newly married couple. The eating and drinking and general merry-making goes on till late into the night.

ITSEKIRI TRADITIONAL WEDDING

Hi all. Today we continue our series on the different tribal groups and their traditional wedding ceremonies. Today we consider the Itsekiri traditional wedding ceremony. I don't know much about the people of Itsekiriland, however i can boldly say that their outfits ( both the bride and the groom) are to die for. The Nigerian women's dress popularly known as George and blouse identified with  Delta state had its origin in Itsekiri land and also the men's long blouse ( Camisa in Portugese )....
I present to you the beautiful brides of Itsekiriland

The jewelry is simply out of this world.

Feels to me like a blend of India and Nigeria sometimes.

THE YORUBA TRADITIONAL WEDDING CEREMONY

Quite alot people refer to this has the engagement ceremony, but i beg to differ. Its the traditional union recognized under the customary law in fact. The ceremony is one that pays homage to the families of the couple. The father and the mother of  both the bride and the groom are given special roles to perform during the ceremony.
Its a colorful event with quite alot of dancing and eating if i may say so. The programe is anchored by the Alaga Iduro for the groom's family and the Alaga Ijoko for the bride's family. The groom is ushered into the venue by his friends and family; who come to seek for the hands of the bride in  marriage. he prostrates to the bride's parent who show their acceptance of him.
the bride comes into the venue with a group of friends wearing the Aso Ebi.
I would at this junction leave the pictures to do the talking

Do have a lovely day.
